Tyre Safety
Look after your tyres, and your tyres will look after you
Ultimately the most important element of any vehicle, tyres are the only thing connecting you with the road. They have a major effect on road holding, braking, steering and acceleration, and correctly looked after they will last longer and improve fuel consumption, helping keep you and your vehicle safe.
The UK also has very specific laws when it comes to tyres. Driving with defective tyres currently carries a fine of £2,500 and a 3 penalty point endorsement. That is per defective tyre, so that’s £5,000 and 6 points for two defective tyres.
Look after your tyres by:
- Inspecting regularly (once a month and before a long journey)
- Remove stones and other objects embedded in the tread
- Maintain correct tyre pressures (check your vehicle handbook for correct pressure)
- Under-inflation – prolonged under-inflation causes rapid wear of the tread shoulders, and your vehicle will also consume more fuel.
- Over-inflation – results in a reduced area of contact with the road, accelerated wear on the tread centre and makes the tyre more susceptible to impact damage.
- Inflation pressure should be checked regularly (every 2-4 weeks) and only when the tyre is cold, as pressure increases when your tyres have been warmed up.
- Check your tyre tread
- All tyres have ‘tread wear indicator bars’ moulded onto the tread. You can find them in the tread grooves and in several locations on the tyre. If you find that any of the bars are becoming worn, ie. Lying flush with the tread ribs, then it’s time to replace your tyre.
